Your First Apartment Move-In Checklist
5 min read
Moving into your first apartment is exciting — and easy to get overwhelmed by. Work through this list and you'll cover the basics.
Two weeks before
Get the logistics locked in:
- Book movers or a truck and reserve the elevator if needed
- Set up electricity, gas and internet in your name
- Buy renter's insurance
- Update your address with your bank, employer and the post office
Move-in day inspection
Before unpacking, walk through every room. Photograph scuffs, stains and damage, test appliances, faucets, locks, and smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Send the landlord a written list.
First-night essentials
Pack a bag with toiletries, phone chargers, bedding, toilet paper, a few tools, cleaning supplies and snacks so you're not hunting through boxes.
Paperwork to keep
Save your signed lease, deposit receipt, inspection photos and the landlord's contact info somewhere easy to find.
Rules differ by state and city. Treat this as general information, not legal or financial advice, and check your local laws or a qualified professional for your situation.
