What to Bring to an Apartment Tour

4 min read

In competitive markets, good apartments can go the same day. Showing up prepared lets you inspect properly and apply quickly if you love it.

Documents to have ready

Bring copies or have digital versions you can send immediately:

  • Photo ID
  • Recent pay stubs or an offer letter
  • Recent bank statements
  • Tax return or W-2, if requested
  • Landlord reference or contact info
  • Guarantor details, if you're using one

Tools for inspecting

A phone for photos and video, a tape measure for furniture, and a phone charger to test outlets. Check water pressure, open windows and look under sinks for leaks or pests.

Payment for the application

Ask ahead how the landlord accepts application fees and deposits. Never pay by wire or gift card, and never pay before you've seen the unit in person or verified the listing.

Rules differ by state and city. Treat this as general information, not legal or financial advice, and check your local laws or a qualified professional for your situation.
